# Claude Agent SDK

> Give an agent built on the Claude Agent SDK a Pidgeon inbox, in Python or TypeScript: connect it to the hosted MCP server with a narrow key and only the tools it needs.

An agent built on the [Claude Agent SDK](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/agent-sdk/overview)
can hold a Pidgeon inbox through the [hosted MCP server](https://pidgeon.ai/docs/mcp.md). The SDK
connects to a remote MCP server with a header, in Python and in TypeScript,
so there is no Pidgeon package to install. The tools, their descriptions and
their defaults are the server's own.

```python
pip install claude-agent-sdk
```

```ts
npm install @anthropic-ai/claude-agent-sdk
```

Both packages bring the Claude Code binary with them, so nothing else needs
installing. The SDK reads `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` from the environment.

## Connecting

The key goes in a header. The model gets the tools you name, and nothing
else:

```python
import os
from claude_agent_sdk import ClaudeAgentOptions, query
options = ClaudeAgentOptions(
  mcp_servers={
      "pidgeon": {
          "type": "http",
          "url": "https://pidgeon.ai/api/mcp",
          "headers": {"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['PIDGEON_API_KEY']}"},
      }
  },
  strict_mcp_config=True,
  tools=[],
  allowed_tools=["mcp__pidgeon__*"],
  permission_mode="dontAsk",
  env={"MCP_TOOL_TIMEOUT": "300000"},
)
async for message in query(prompt="Summarise the five newest conversations.", options=options):
  print(message)
```

```ts
import { query } from '@anthropic-ai/claude-agent-sdk';
for await (const message of query({
prompt: 'Summarise the five newest conversations.',
options: {
  mcpServers: {
    pidgeon: {
      type: 'http',
      url: 'https://pidgeon.ai/api/mcp',
      headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.PIDGEON_API_KEY}` },
      timeout: 300_000,
    },
  },
  strictMcpConfig: true,
  tools: [],
  allowedTools: ['mcp__pidgeon__*'],
  permissionMode: 'dontAsk',
},
})) {
console.log(message);
}
```

**Name the tools it may call.** Pidgeon's arrive as `mcp__pidgeon__<tool>`.
`allowedTools` runs the ones it lists without asking, and `mcp__pidgeon__*`
lists all of them; with `permissionMode: "dontAsk"`, anything not listed is
refused rather than waiting for a person who is not there. `tools: []` takes
away Claude Code's own tools (the shell, file edits, web fetch), which an
inbox agent has no use for. `strictMcpConfig` leaves out the MCP servers in
the Claude Code setup of whoever runs it.

**Raise the timeout.** `await_message` holds one request open until mail
arrives — 50 seconds by default, at most 280 — and returns it with
`extracted.codes` and `extracted.links` already pulled out ([Verification
codes](https://pidgeon.ai/docs/verification-codes.md)). Claude Code ends an MCP request after 60
seconds unless told otherwise, so a wait set longer than a minute fails. In
TypeScript the server takes a `timeout` in milliseconds; in Python, set
`MCP_TOOL_TIMEOUT` in `env`.

Bodies arrive cleaned by [Pidgeon Firewall](https://pidgeon.ai/docs/firewall.md): hidden text
removed and fake chat turns marked. The model can ask for `body: "original"`
when it needs the HTML.

## The key is the whole of the access control

Nothing in the SDK decides what the agent may reach. The key does, on the
server, as it does for any other caller. Give it the narrowest one the job
needs:

- **One address.** A key lists the addresses it reaches, so an agent holding
  a key for `support@yourdomain.com` cannot read `payroll@`.
- **The lowest level that does the job.** An agent that triages needs `read`,
  and a `read` key cannot send, whatever the prompt says. One that answers
  needs `send`.
- **An end date.** A key with `expires_at` stops working on its own.

The program below mints exactly that: one address, `send`, an hour.
[Authentication](https://pidgeon.ai/docs/authentication.md) covers narrowing a key by hand. A
refusal reaches the model as a tool error carrying the API's own sentence, so
it can tell a person why instead of retrying.

## Waiting for a code

When the agent is about to cause the mail — submitting a form, sending a
message — the right order is to take a cursor first: `await_message` with
`after: "now"` and `timeout: 1` returns at once with a `cursor`. Then it
submits the form, then it waits with that cursor as `after`. The mail cannot
arrive before the wait starts, and an older email cannot be taken for it. The
tool's description tells the model this, so it needs no instruction of yours.

## The whole program

The program makes an address that expires in an hour and a key for that
address alone, and gives the agent only the key. The agent emails itself a
sign-in code, waits for it, and answers with what it read; the program then
reads the message back with its own key, because the agent's word is not
proof.

```python
"""A Pidgeon inbox for a Claude Agent SDK agent.
  pip install -r requirements.txt
  PIDGEON_API_KEY=pgn_live_… ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-… python main.py
`PIDGEON_API_KEY` is an admin key. With it the program makes an address that
expires in an hour and mints a key for that address alone: send access, the
same hour. The agent gets only that key, so the most it can do is mail from
one address that is about to disappear.
The agent then sends itself a sign-in code, waits for it to arrive and
reports what it read. The tools are Pidgeon's hosted MCP server's, so their
names, descriptions and defaults are the server's own.
