# CrewAI

> Give a CrewAI agent a Pidgeon inbox: connect it to the hosted MCP server with a narrow key, keep each wait under CrewAI’s 30-second limit, and read the code back.

A [CrewAI](https://docs.crewai.com) agent can hold a Pidgeon inbox through the
[hosted MCP server](https://pidgeon.ai/docs/mcp.md). CrewAI connects to a remote MCP server with a
header, so there is no Pidgeon package to install. The tools, their
descriptions and their defaults are the server's own.

```bash
pip install crewai pidgeon
```

## Connecting

The key goes in a header, and `tool_filter` names the tools the agent may
call:

```python
import os
from crewai import Agent
from crewai.mcp import MCPServerHTTP
from crewai.mcp.filters import create_static_tool_filter
pidgeon = MCPServerHTTP(
  url="https://pidgeon.ai/api/mcp",
  headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['PIDGEON_API_KEY']}"},
  tool_filter=create_static_tool_filter(
      allowed_tool_names=["list_threads", "get_thread", "await_message"]
  ),
  cache_tools_list=True,
)
agent = Agent(
  role="Inbox assistant",
  goal="Work one Pidgeon inbox.",
  backstory=(
      "CrewAI ends a tool call after 30 seconds, so give await_message a "
      "timeout of 25 at most; when it times out, call it again with the "
      "cursor it returned as `after`."
  ),
  llm="openai/gpt-5-mini",
  mcps=[pidgeon],
)
print(agent.kickoff("Summarise the five newest conversations.").raw)
```

**Keep each wait under 30 seconds.** `await_message` holds one request open
until mail arrives — 50 seconds by default, at most 280 — and returns it with
`extracted.codes` and `extracted.links` already pulled out ([Verification
codes](https://pidgeon.ai/docs/verification-codes.md)). CrewAI ends any MCP tool call after 30
seconds and tries it twice more, and the timeout cannot be changed, so a
40-second wait fails after a minute and a half. A wait of 25 seconds,
repeated from the `cursor` it returns, misses nothing. The agent learns this
from its backstory, as above.

**Use `mcps`, not `MCPServerAdapter`.** The adapter in `crewai-tools` sends
every optional argument as `null`, and the server refuses a `null` where it
expects a value.

Bodies arrive cleaned by [Pidgeon Firewall](https://pidgeon.ai/docs/firewall.md): hidden text
removed and fake chat turns marked. The model can ask for `body: "original"`
when it needs the HTML.

## The key is the whole of the access control

Nothing in CrewAI decides what the agent may reach. The key does, on the
server, as it does for any other caller. Give it the narrowest one the job
needs:

- **One address.** A key lists the addresses it reaches, so an agent holding
  a key for `support@yourdomain.com` cannot read `payroll@`.
- **The lowest level that does the job.** An agent that triages needs `read`,
  and a `read` key cannot send, whatever the prompt says. One that answers
  needs `send`.
- **An end date.** A key with `expires_at` stops working on its own.

The program below mints exactly that: one address, `send`, an hour.
[Authentication](https://pidgeon.ai/docs/authentication.md) covers narrowing a key by hand.

## Waiting for a code

When the agent is about to cause the mail — submitting a form, sending a
message — the right order is to take a cursor first: `await_message` with
`after: "now"` and `timeout: 1` returns at once with a `cursor`. Then it
submits the form, then it waits with that cursor as `after`. The mail cannot
arrive before the wait starts, and an older email cannot be taken for it. The
tool's description tells the model this.

## The whole program

The program makes an address that expires in an hour and a key for that
address alone, and gives the agent only the key. The agent emails itself a
sign-in code, waits for it, and answers with what it read; the program then
reads the message back with its own key, because the agent's word is not
proof.

```python
"""A Pidgeon inbox for a CrewAI agent.
  pip install -r requirements.txt
  PIDGEON_API_KEY=pgn_live_… OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-… python main.py
`PIDGEON_API_KEY` is an admin key. With it the program makes an address that
expires in an hour and mints a key for that address alone: send access, the
same hour. The agent gets only that key, so the most it can do is mail from
one address that is about to disappear.
The agent then sends itself a sign-in code, waits for it to arrive and
reports what it read. The tools are Pidgeon's hosted MCP server's, so their
names, descriptions and defaults are the server's own.
