LangChain
The same tools as the MCP server, as a LangChain toolkit.
An agent built on LangChain
or LangGraph can hold a Pidgeon mailbox through langchain-pidgeon, a
toolkit of nine tools. They are the hosted MCP server's by name,
and each one is one call of the Python SDK, so a refusal is the
API's own.
pip install langchain-pidgeonConnecting
The toolkit reads PIDGEON_API_KEY, and hands the model every tool:
from langchain.agents import create_agent
from langchain_pidgeon import PidgeonToolkit
tools = PidgeonToolkit().get_tools()
agent = create_agent("anthropic:claude-sonnet-5-5", tools=tools)
result = agent.invoke(
{"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Summarise the five newest conversations."}]}
)
print(result["messages"][-1].content)PidgeonToolkit(api_key=...) takes the key directly. Each tool also works on
its own, outside an agent:
from langchain_pidgeon import AwaitMessage
wait = AwaitMessage()
print(wait.invoke({"identity_id": "0b5d1c1e-…", "has_code": True, "timeout": 60}))A wait holds one request open. await_message returns when mail arrives
— 50 seconds by default, at most 280 — with extracted.codes and
extracted.links already pulled out (Verification
codes). The toolkit's client allows 300 seconds
for a reply, so no timeout needs raising.
A wait looks back two minutes first. A code that lands between
submitting a form and calling await_message is still its answer: without
after, the newest matching message from the last two minutes is returned
before it waits. The example below takes a cursor first all the same, which
also works.
Bodies arrive cleaned by Pidgeon Firewall: hidden text
removed and fake chat turns marked. The model can ask for body: "original"
when it needs the HTML. The arguments are the Python SDK's spelling, so the
sender is from_ and the folder is in_.
The key is the whole of the access control
Nothing in the toolkit decides what the agent may reach. The key does, on the server, as it does for any other caller. Give it the narrowest one the job needs:
- One address. A key lists the addresses it reaches, so an agent holding
a key for
support@yourdomain.comcannot readpayroll@. - The lowest level that does the job. An agent that triages needs
read, and areadkey cannot send, whatever the prompt says. One that answers needssend.
Authentication covers how to narrow a key. A refusal
reaches the model as a tool error carrying the API's own sentence, so it can
tell a person why instead of retrying. Pass handle_tool_error=False to a
tool to have it raise instead.
Asking before anything is sent
Each tool's metadata carries the MCP server's four hints: readOnlyHint,
destructiveHint, idempotentHint and openWorldHint. LangChain's
human-in-the-loop middleware can stop at every tool that is not read-only:
from langchain.agents import create_agent
from langchain.agents.middleware import HumanInTheLoopMiddleware
from langgraph.checkpoint.memory import InMemorySaver
tools = PidgeonToolkit().get_tools()
asks_first = {tool.name: True for tool in tools if not tool.metadata["readOnlyHint"]}
agent = create_agent(
"anthropic:claude-sonnet-5-5",
tools=tools,
middleware=[HumanInTheLoopMiddleware(interrupt_on=asks_first)],
checkpointer=InMemorySaver(),
)Creating an address, a send, a reply or a hand-over then pauses the run with
result.interrupts. You answer each call with a decision and resume with
Command(resume=...). The example below does it at a terminal prompt.
The tools
| Tool | What it does | Kind |
|---|---|---|
list_addresses | The addresses the key can reach, with the ids the other tools take | Read-only |
create_address | A new address for the agent; anybody can then write to it | Open world |
list_messages | One conversation, oldest first | Read-only |
search_messages | Full-text search across every address the key reaches | Read-only |
get_message | One message, cleaned unless you ask for the original | Read-only |
await_message | Waits up to 280 seconds for the next message and returns its codes, links | Read-only |
send_message | A new message to anybody | Destructive |
reply_to_message | An answer in the same conversation; recipients come off the original | Destructive |
update_thread | Hands a conversation to a person, or takes it back | Reversible |
The MCP server has more: drafts, labels, folders, attachments
and pods. An agent that needs those can connect to https://pidgeon.ai/api/mcp
with langchain-mcp-adapters instead.
The whole program
A command-line agent for one mailbox. Pass it a task, or let it summarise the
newest conversations. It asks at the prompt before anything that is not
read-only. python main.py --check runs the tools with no model.
"""A Pidgeon mailbox for a LangChain agent.
pip install -r requirements.txt
PIDGEON_API_KEY=pgn_live_… ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-… python main.py "What came in today?"
The tools are `langchain-pidgeon`'s, which are the hosted MCP server's by
name. Bodies arrive cleaned by Pidgeon Firewall unless the model asks for
`body: "original"`.
Anything that is not read-only (creating an address, sending, replying,
handing over) stops and asks you first. Each tool's `metadata` says whether
it is read-only, and that flag is what decides it.
`python main.py --check` runs the tools with no model: it makes an address,
mails it a code, waits for the code, replies, hands the conversation to a
person, and deletes the address (with an `admin` key; otherwise it expires
in an hour).
